Helping Women Take Control of Their Lives and Move Out of Homelessness

NEW Executive Director Wanda Steptoe has more than 20 years experience working in various residential settings, including group homes for adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities, and has extensive experience in capacity building, supervision, quality assurance and compliance monitoring for federal, state, and accreditation standards and regulations.

Before coming to work with NEW in 2005, Ms. Steptoe established a crisis center and transitional living program for youth who were homeless. It was that experience, she says, that helped bring about her interest in working with NEW. “I had enjoyed working with youth who were homeless, and became interested because NEW serves women. I think most people associate homelessness with men, and programs designed to meet the needs of youth and women are much needed.”

In addition to her program development, administration, management, monitoring and evaluation experience, Wanda Steptoe brings a strong personal drive to her work with NEW: “The women we serve have made a courageous decision to change their lives despite the obstacles and challenges they face as a result of that decision. I want to be a part of the team that helps to encourage and lift women.”
